THE FRENCH BAKERY

Today I went to my favorite Sunday breakfast spot, the French Bakery. This morning's visit, however, provided me much more than the usual tea and pastry.

Like lots of folks, Sunday is my favorite day of the week. Not because it’s a rest day, not because of the football game, not because of the great family dinner we’ll enjoy this evening, but because it’s the day I get to eat a butter-laden, calorie-filled French croissant for breakfast at Café Breizh. I fell in love with croissants over 40 years ago when I lived in Paris and ate two every morning on my way to work. Now eating two a day would mean buying pants three sizes larger than the ones I currently own, or committing to two hours daily of cardio to burn the bad stuff off (not gonna happen!).

My Sunday morning croissant experience has always been divine, but this Sunday was a little different. Never have I arrived at the café with a package of Wet Ones to disinfect the table, or worried about sitting too close to the next croissant lover. As a matter of fact, a visit to Café Breizh was always an opportunity to meet someone new and speak French to the owner, or one of the other French employees who worked there.

The coronavirus has truly taken on a life of its own and the panic, some say, is even worse than the disease.

So why the Wet Ones this morning? The worldwide hysteria surrounding COVID-19, provides an unspoken answer. Everyone is on heightened alert about the virus, afraid to touch anything, hug anyone or take a chance of being in a closed room with more than 10 friends. The coronavirus has truly taken on a life of its own and the panic, some say, is even worse than the disease.

The onset of this virus, is changing our lives forever. While sitting in the café, I wondered what’s going to happen now. I looked through the sun filled window and watched people going in and out of stores (a luxury that is no longer afforded to people in many countries, including ours as of late), I saw children playing, children who will process this hysterical phenomenon of 2020 as a common occurrence that just ‘happens’ and I also saw my reflection in the glass. I haven’t changed, I’m still the never-slow-down (except on Sunday morning) woman I’ve always been, but in my gut, I know this Sunday is different. Sometimes it takes an occurrence like Coronavirus to unabashedly put things into perspective and move you to reflect on where you’re going, as a person, and what’s the best way to get there.

I experienced a life-changing moment today at the French bakery. My croissant was delectable, as always, but the thoughts I had about my future while sitting at the small, thoroughly disinfected table, were something new. Retreating to a sobering mental place like this is something we all need, at one time or another, and I’m glad I was drawn to that place today.

Go to one of your favorite, quiet places this week and take a moment to reflect. How is your life going to be altered because of what may be happening in our world today? How are you going to change as a person because of it? There are lots of questions and a small moment of inner reflection in a calming environment will help you to answer them.
